So I figured this anime would be like another Lord of the Flies, but less violent or something. However, they don't even get to the deserted planet in episode one, since they have to set up all the relationships between the students, so I can't really tell. ^_^
Luna seems to be the main character, a cute, spunky girl with orange hair who stands up for what she believes in. Her father was killed saving her from an accident on the Mars colony where she grew up when she was little, and her mother had died a couple years before, so now she's living alone (except for the flippant cat robot that she also grew up with), and has newly transferred to a prestigious private academy. However, the private academy seems to have some problems between the kids, since Howard's dad (the blonde kid) is the head of a super-powerful company, and he basically does whatever he wants, with most of the rest of the school happily following. Of course, when Luna comes, she doesn't back down from what she knows is wrong, and luckily she has another ally in Kaoru, who thinks that the whole Howard thing is just stupid. When Kaoru is confronted after school by Howard and his crew, Luna can't help but step in, until the kids accidentally start a fire, trapping Luna's new friend Sharla and making Howard run away saying he knew nothing about it. Can Luna ignore her flashbacks to the explosions that killed her father and save Sharla? :o
Man, anime creators never get tired of starting off anime with the main character being late for class, do they? Silly things like that aside, this seems like another nicely-done adaptation of a familiar story of cliques, getting along, and standing up for yourself that is likely to be continued when they get to the deserted island. Apparently they are going on a field trip next week to see a new planet being prepared for colonization, so I assume we'll be getting to that part soon. The characters are typical but well-made and reasonably well-acted, so it's still quite a bit of fun to watch. Luna ends up being a lot cuter in the actual anime than in the promo artwork, so there's a big plus there. ^^
Overall this series is very worthy of being a nice NHK anime for kids, and the characters should be fun to watch throughout the story. Oh, the OP/ED themes are both pretty good too! Among the better ones of the season, for sure. If you missed the post in the forums, the OP is being done by Kiroro, and ED is being done by Round Table featuring Nino. You can listen to a sample of the ED on this page. (scroll to the bottom - realplayer only! ^^;) |
