Uta∽Kata

Aired in October 2004

On the discussion of the name... I'm not really sure what it's supposed to mean - the symbol in the middle is one used for similarity or analogy, and the characters they use are similar to those for "a person specializing in song" in classical Japanese shamisen music, but with the "poetic" character for uta instead of the song character. Maybe I'll have to come back to this after I've seen the whole anime. ^^

Putting that aside, Uta∽Kata is a very cute anime about 14-year-old Ichika, who is having her last day of school before summer vacation. She and her friends are cleaning out a room in the old school building when someone mentions that there are some rumors about the mirror Ichika looks at, she gets really scared! Of course, I can't blame her since the rumors seem to be true, as she saw someone else in the mirror! And when she comes back later to retrieve her cell phone, the cell phone is only in the mirror! A girl named Maika comes out of the mirror, Ichika is transformed into a sun priestess's outfit and sees some sort of god/spirit thing, and Maika asks Ichika to do her homework for her. Oh, and Maika ends up staying at Ichika's house for the summer. ;P

There are some other weird things that happen in episode one, with some mysterious lady, a dream with Maika saying she loves Ichika, and Ichika's parents saying something about it being her "last day". But no lesbian CPR... Altogether, I really liked this first episode and hope that the rest of the series lives up to its promise. I really liked all the voices, and thought that newcomer (I think) Honda Youko did a great job as Ichika. Some really good scenes throughout the ep. And good songs for the OP and ED, too. Exciting~ ^^
